Treating A Yeast Infection

Any yeast infection should be given a priority for treatment. It is important to contain the infection to prevent it spreading to other parts of the body and becoming a major problem. Usually it can take a few days or weeks for any improvements to show depending on the severity of the infection. If the symptoms persist then you should consult your doctor or health practitioner.

Over the past few years, the use of over-the-counter drugs had proven effective in the treatment of yeast infections. They usually contain four main ingredients which are necessary to keep the infection at bay. They are also among the anti-fungal family of medicines. Some well-known drugs are Clotrimazole, Butoconazole, Miconazole and Tioconazole.

The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has approved the use of these drugs to keep infection from spreading, but remember that most antibiotics work by killing bacteria and do not solve the real cause. Antibiotics are also known to disrupt the balance of healthy bacteria in the vagina and rectum, causing vaginitis, constipation and diarrhea.

These drugs, which inhibit the production of ergosterol, belong to the ‘azole’ family. Ergosterol is part of the yeast membranes, and the absence of this shield causes the yeast to decay and break down. Your doctor will probably recommend azole treatment because they have been demonstrated to be safe, efficient and able to handle a wide range of yeast infections.

Other potent drugs include Nystatin and Amphotericin B. Nystatin is very effective in Candida infections and thrush, while amphotericin B is reserved to fight serious fungal infections. Similar to azole treatment strategy, these two drugs are able to break down the ergosterol found in cell wall of yeast.

Many of these treatments are applied over a week. Before applying always read the label. If there are irritations or allergies then you should stop treatment immediately. Consult with your doctor or health practitioner before starting any treatment if you are pregnant.

You have the option of a wide range of treatments for your yeast infection, including use of creams and pills. Other treatments include sprays and injections. It is up to you which method you are comfortable with. If your medication or self care does not ward off infections, it is possible that there are other problems or issues present that do not exhibit any symptoms.

Taking your infection seriously is extremely important. If this is your first yeast infection it is advisable to talk to your doctor about your condition. Informing your doctor about the symptoms you have will enable them to formulate an effective plan for treating your yeast infection.

A Male Yeast Infection and Treatment

The male macho thing is still alive and kicking and most men wouldn’t read about yeast infections unless the word ‘male’ is in the title. However yeast infections in men are just as prevalent as women. Here we will be looking at infections in the groin area which are predominantly passed by sexual intercourse.

Just to start though, do you have a beer belly that won’t disappear whatever you do? Are you tired and listless sometimes? Does it irritate when you pass water but you know you haven’t strayed from your partner so it can’t be serious. Well it could be, these are some of the symptoms of an intestine infection so you really need to get checked out. It’s a simple ‘in house’ check that takes 20 minutes or so.

So, you have you think you have a yeast infection but can you be sure? The symptoms of an infection are similar to that of some STD’s. Pain when passing urine, white discharge and sore around the tip. You are going to have the bite the bullet here and go to your doctor to get diagnosed. It’s a pointless exercise to leave it and hope it will go away you will just cause yourself more pain.

If you’ve been out, had a few beers, had rose tinted glasses on and slept with someone you don’t know then you could be in trouble. Hopefully for you it will be just a yeast infection that can be cleared up quickly. Alternatively, if you have had it diagnosed and you think you have got it from your partner then you will need to tell them. Assuming they are female it’s not to say that they have slept with someone else, women get yeast infections for for a number of different reasons.

If for some reason you don’t get it treated right away here is what will probably happen, and if it scares you then that is what is intended. The infection will spread onto the skin around the shaft and groin. The skin underneath will harden to protect from invasion into the bloodstream. The skin will crack and bleed and be extremely painful. Scared yet? Think about this, the infection will spread internally into the prostrate gland. If it goes that far then you are in trouble.

As said before the symptoms are easily recognizable. Your doctor may say it’s just a urine infection, ask him to check for a candida yeast infection. Many doctors are skeptical about the possibility of yeast infections so you may have to force the issue. Even if your partner has been diagnosed and you are sure that is what you have you must get it diagnosed correctly.

Once you get a yeast infection then the chances are it will come back again if you are not careful. You will need to look at your lifestyle. Diet, stress, taking antibiotics regularly and lack of regular exercise are all contributing factors.

First cut out the excess sugar and beer, start taking some exercise every day. The extra oxygen in your bloodstream will help fight any infection. These small steps will help improve your general health as well.

This Yeast Free Diet Is Killing Me

A couple of months ago my wife decided that she was going to try out a yeast free diet. She has always suffered from yeast infections at least two or three times a year. Usually they are after a heavy period or if she has been busy at work.

Because she was going to try a yeast free diet that also meant that I was as well. I did point out that I didn’t have a problem but she insisted that if I loved her I would support her. I’m sure most married men understand that particular argument.

As the diet is only for six to eight weeks I agreed. I decided a bit of a detox would probably do me good anyway. So, no sugar, no bread or cakes, no mayonnaise or ketchup, no cheese and no processed meats like bacon, ham or salami.

That’s my morning coffee and donuts gone, my lunchtime sandwich gone and my pizza while watching the football at the weekend. The hardest has been the beer. I do like a beer with my pizza and sometimes with a barbecue on Sundays. But the diet says no alcohol.

I will admit that the diet has been good for me. I have lost a few extra pounds and feel much healthier. I’ve actually taken up my squash game again and my boss has invited me out for a round of golf this weekend.

My pot belly has also disappeared. My wife said it could have been an overgrowth of yeast in my stomach which has now been cleared. This does sound quite reasonable, although there is no way to prove otherwise.

My wife has also lost a few pounds and is starting to look pretty hot again. She says that she feels much better as well and doesn’t get any of those little aches and pains that she used to get before.

The kids are looking healthy as well. Their skin has really improved and they have hardly any spots now, although they wouldn’t thank you for pointing it out.

My problem is that my wife wants to carry on with the yeast free diet even though the initial period is over. Her argument is that it has proved beneficial to her with her yeast infection. It has also improved my life over the last few months.

We have come to an agreement that we can introduce some of the foods that we previously stopped back into our diet. We have to be careful and monitor any changes in the way we feel so we can pinpoint any foods that do not agree with us.

So it looks like I may get pizza again this weekend but still no beer.

A yeast free diet doesn’t have to be difficult.

The Unspoken Benefits of a Candida Free Diet

A candida free diet is primarily for those people who suffer from a candida or yeast infection. Because of the nature of the diet there are also hidden benefits that may not be easily recognizable. Among the other benefits that have been mentioned are weight loss, more energy, and looking and feeling younger. Could a candida type diet actually be a step towards improving your overall health even if you don’t suffer from a yeast infection.

A candia infection will normally occur when the body is below par. This can be for a number of reasons most notable are stress and the use of antibiotics. Other reasons linked include the use of birth control pills in women, tight clothing, excess alcohol and generally eating the wrong foods.

A candida diet is centered around fresh meat and vegetables, and small amounts of carbohydrates with potatoes and rice. This really is the basis of any healthy diet. The diet does not include fresh fruit because of the high sugar content although fresh lime and lemon juice are acceptable. It may be necessary to take a vitamin supplement to ensure that you get your daily requirement.

With a diet that is based on fresh food we can see that a reduction in additives and chemicals would benefit the body overall. Too many processed foods contain chemicals that are just not a part of our natural diet or contain excessive amounts of chemicals. Sodium, which is extracted from sea salt is one such substance. By removing processed foods from your diet and using untreated sea salt in your diet you are ensuring you get the right amount of sodium daily.

By reducing saturated fats and sugar in your diet you will see some obvious benefits in weight loss. Animal fats have been a part of our natural diet for the last million years and should not cause any problems. Oils such as olive oil, palm oil and coconut oil are totally natural as well. Coconut oil makes a great sweetener in certain recipes.

It may be said that reducing sugar in your diet would actually reduce your energy levels. However sugar is not the only source of energy. The protein from fresh meat products is broken down and used as energy. Also carbohydrates from potatoes and rice are used. It is when the body has sugar that is easy to break down that excess carbohydrates and protein are stored as fat.

Be wary of so called natural foods such as vegetable oil and vegetable margarine. Check the additives next time you are tempted to buy. Dairy milk products are not a natural part of our diet. We are the only species that actually drinks the milk from another species and calls it healthy. Yes there are cases where the mother of one species will suckle another but these are rare. Also the use of pesticides on farmland and the addition of antibiotics to cattle fodder are now showing in the milk. While many experts say this is not a problem I for one have a problem with it.

With the increase in pollution all around us our bodies are being subjected to an unusual amount of unnatural substances. A candida diet, which is based on fresh and natural foods should be considered by anyone who wants to improve their quality of life and health.

Yeast Free Food For a Yeast Free Diet – Part Two

Welcome to part two of this, what I consider, highly informative article. If you haven’t read part one then really you should as it lays down the basics for this article. The discussion is based around the differences of opinion about what food is acceptable for a yeast free diet, what isn’t acceptable, and why.

Wheat flour is another point of controversy amongst proponents of a yeast free diet. Wheat flour is high in gluten which is the starch that holds bread together during the baking process. This is why you never see other flours used with yeast commercially in bread making. But gluten is a starch and the candida yeast will feed off it. My personal opinion is that you can use wheat flour but only as a substitute for potatoes or rice after the initial 2-3 weeks of the diet. For example you could make some soda bread to go with a vegetable soup or some fish and vegetables rolled up in a thin pancake.

Following on from wheat flour, what about potatoes and rice? Both seem to be okay in most people’s eyes but I would suggest leaving rice and potatoes to stand in water for an hour and then rinse off into clean water before cooking, then rinse again with hot water when cooked. This will help to get rid of any excess starch.

Moving on to nuts. Most people agree that nuts are okay except peanuts. I have been informed that peanuts have a fungus growth on them which would seem reasonable. If you consider that peanuts come in a soft shell and other nuts come with a hard shell then it could have some truth. I think I would agree with that and stay away from peanuts.

Dairy produce seems to have some controversy as well. Cheese is definitely out because of the bacteria used in manufacturing. Milk in small amounts used in cooking should be okay but it has been found to contain trace antibiotics, pesticides and growth hormones. Milk is best avoided at any time. Butter is high in fat which is good for yeast, switch to a vegetable margarine but check the label for the ingredients. Eggs are from heaven, full of protein, vitamins and minerals, eat as many as you like.

Finally, soya and soya products. Most soya products are processed and include sugar, especially soya milk. Soya in itself doesn’t appear to cause a problem but read the label of any product you are thinking of buying.

As a general rule you should read the ingredients of any packaged food you buy to satisfy yourself of what it contains. Rely on your instincts, and you shouldn’t go far wrong.

A diet for candida has to be considered carefully. It isn’t something that will work for everyone or something that most people will enjoy. Not being able to eat or drink things that we have all grown up with like bread, cheese and beer can be extremely difficult. That said people who have followed the diet have reported having more energy, feeling and looking younger and weight loss.

Candida yeast is present everywhere on and in the body although it does prefer warm moist places. For children an infection usually happens as nappy rash or in the ears. For women it is normally a vaginal infection and for men it is in the groin area. Stomach and intestine infections can affect both men and women without discrimination.

Why a candida yeast diet?

The treatments for a yeast infection are well publicized with medicinal drugs, homeopathic remedies, natural remedies and home remedies. These all come with testimonials that prove they work and can be effective. The point that most of these miss is that there is an underlying problem as to why more people are suffering from yeast infections.

If we take a step back and look at how the human body became as it did we may be able to pinpoint the problem. Man as a species has been around for about a million years. Yes, we had fire early on but it’s only in the last few thousand years that agriculture and the ability to make bread has come about. Processed foods such as packet and tinned foods have only appeared in the last hundred years or so. When you look at any label and the chemicals that have been added that should show you that this food is not natural.

A candida yeast diet is based around natural food that our bodies and digestive system was designed for.

What are the benefits of a candida yeast diet?

There are many reported benefits but the most obvious one is that you are clearing your system of toxins and antioxidants. You will begin to feel better almost immediately. The long term benefits are that you are depriving the yeast of the food it needs to grow, so not only are you killing off the infection, you are also reducing the chance of an infection occurring in the future. Other benefits as noted earlier are more energy, feeling and looking younger and weight loss.

What are the side effects of a candida yeast diet?

Going back to nature is not all roses. The temptation of a biscuit, slice of bread or chocolate bar are enormous. The yeast growth doesn’t help either when it demands sugar. Cravings for sugar and other foods are one of the side effects. Others are constipation and fatigue while the body adjusts. Being able to convince friends and family that your course of action is necessary can be difficult as well, especially when they are all relatively healthy. Most side effect disappear after 2 – 3 weeks.

How do I go about starting a candida yeast diet?

The first thing to do is remove temptation foods from your cupboards, freezer and fridge. Tell everyone what you are doing and why. Read everything you can about the diet so you are well informed and can make your own decisions, not everything you read is true. Go and see your doctor so they are aware of what you are doing and you can ask them for any advice.

At first glance a candida yeast free diet can seem very restrictive and minimal but when you dig a little deeper you will see that there are lots of choices. With a little imagination and practice you can actually get to enjoy fresh food again.

Yeast Free Food For a Yeast Free Diet – Part One

There seems to be some disagreement surrounding what a yeast free diet is and what is yeast free food. Some claim that wheat is not allowed while others say you can eat it. Some people say you can use soy but others say ‘no’. As an amateur nutritionist I will try to present a few facts that will help clear up some disagreement. As a chef for 25 years and catering manager in an elderly care home for a few years I feel well qualified to make these comparisons. I also use a yeast free diet but as a preventative method rather than a treatment. But I do feel much better and I have lost a few excess pounds so perhaps it is justified.

The basis of a yeast free diet should be to concentrate on wholly natural foods. The reasoning behind this is that the body and the chemicals used to digest food have been designed just for that and not for all the preservatives and flavor enhancers that are used.

If we take salt as an example, table salt is processed from natural salt and all the minerals present, apart from the sodium chloride, are removed. Chemicals and iodine (the addition of iodine is another story) are then added to keep the salt free flowing and dry. Firstly, we are losing out on the minerals and secondly we are taking in chemicals that shouldn’t be there and are not natural food. While the chemicals are not dangerous in themselves they do make the digestive system work overtime to get rid of them leaving a gap for the yeast.

Refined sugar and processed sugar seems to be agreed on by everyone. This is understandable as sugar is used in baking to make yeast active. However there does seem to be controversy over sweeteners. My personal recommendation is to avoid them initially because they are not a natural food and contain various chemicals. Even the so called natural sweeteners will have been processed.

Fruit contains fructose which is a natural sugar. Some fruits have higher levels than others but all fruit should be avoided for the first few weeks. After the initial period then green apples, water melon and strawberries should be okay. Start off with some small portions and see how you feel. Most dried fruits like dates and raisins are high in sugar and should be avoided completely. Some root vegetables also contain fructose, notably carrots. However a small portion mixed with other vegetables should be okay. Avoid eating raw carrot for snacks initially.

At the present moment there has not been any scientific research into candida infection and how a diet can help. Much of the information has come from personal experience and recommendation. Because everyone is different I have tried to take a more scientific approach to the diet and explain why some foods are allowed and others are not.
